World Airline Sailing Championships 2019 - Loosdrecht, netherlands

Qantas a close 3rd overall with Finnair placing first with Swiss a legendary 2nd. 10 races in 20 Valk keel boats over three days run by the KLM Sailing Team.
Day one was windy, cold and rainy, perfect conditions for the Qantas team who were sailing 3 up in each boat. A delayed start on day 2 of sailing saw mild sunny and calm conditions for most of the day. Day 3 retuned a beaut day for sailing with warm weather and a slight breeze. Loosdrecht is 35 kilometres south of Schiphol Airport and is a delightful lake set in superb surroundings. World Airline Sailing Championships 2018 - Chicago, USA
Qantas 1st in the World Airline Sailing Championships held in Chicago, Sept 19th to 20th 2018
United Airlines hosted a wonderful regatta on Lake Michigan where 9 airlines competed in the combined WASC/ASCA Sailing Championships.
Chicago's Belmont Harbor, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, was the venue where a fleet of eight J22s were sailed on a rotational basis. Of the 16 scheduled races, only ten were completed due to the wind exceeding the fleet's maximum wind speed of 30 knots on several days. They call it the "Windy City" for good reasons! Qantas Sailing Club will defend the title next year in Amsterdam where KLM will host the 2019 WASC which coincides with KLM's 100 year anniversary. Four Qantas Sailing Club members trekked to Chicago in order to compete, bringing home the WASC trophy that was jealously held by Finnair for many years.

NSW Police sailing Regatta - Middle Harbour - March 2017
Qantas 1st and 2nd and 3rd in the Adams 10 Division in 2017 of the NSW Police Regatta
Qantas Sailing Club takes out First, Second and Third in the Adams 10 division of the Police and Emergency Services Regatta for 2017.
We had a record turn out of Qantas Sailing Club members to this year's NSW Police Sailing Regatta which made it fun for all. Rainy, windy, calm, sunny, hot and humid pretty much sums up the weather of the three day event. This is no way dampened the spirits and enthusiasm of the Qantas Sailing Team as each member saw it as a personal challenge to get to the end of the day.
Thanks again to the generosity of the well prepared Adams 10s owned by Paul Saunders (Let Loose), Geoff Charters (No Friends) and Mitch Miller (Rock Solid) .
Dave Blackmore, Commodore of the NSW Police Sailing Club organised an excellent regatta again for this year. A big thanks to Dave as well as a big thank you to the Middle Harbour Yacht Club for making us all feel welcome.
Some excellent photos of the event can be seen HERE, thanks to Dave Blackmore, Matt Sims, Andrew Marshall and Mark Radovich

Qantas 1st and 2nd in the Adams 10 Division again in 2015 Qantas Sailing Club takes out First and Second again in the Adams 10 division of the Police and Emergency Services Regatta for 2015. Sadly, this year's fleet was diminished by 33% over last year but despite the reduced numbers, the Qantas teams put in a sterling performance in the two boats they sailed. Thanks again to the generosity of the well prepared Adams 10s owned by Paul Saunders (Let Loose) and Geoff Charters (No Friends). 18 races in glorious conditions. Only one point difference between first and second with Finnair the remaining champions for a record fifth year in a row. Qantas a valiant second. Emergency Services Regatta - Middle Harbour - March 2014
Qantas 1st and 2nd in the Adams 10 Division
Qantas Sailing Club takes out First and Second in the Adams 10 division of the Police and Emergency Services Regatta for 2014.
OK, there were only 3 Adams 10s in the fleet but the winning margins were huge between 2nd and 3rd.
It was a very close series with 4 wins and 3 seconds to No Friends skippered by Fred Haes and Andrew Marshall and 3 wins and 4 seconds to Let Loose skippered by Adrian France and Mark Radovich. Some races were as close as two seconds across the line in this scratch series. With three wins a piece, it was down to the last exciting race.
Plenty of sledging, bragging rights, buckets of water, and fun-in-the-sun had by all! We finished most days with a swim over the shallow sandy beach near the club, followed by extensive debriefs until late in the night.
On each boat we had our friends from the Coolangatta ARFF, the guys at ARFF headquarters in Canberra, sailors from the Department of the Environment and of course current and retired QF staff - even a backpacker or two!
A total of 10 yachts and 3 divisions participated in the regatta held at Middle Harbour Yacht Club.
Thanks very much to the owners of both Adams 10s: Let Loose - Paul Saunders, No Friends - Geoff Charters and Craig and special thanks to Dave Blackmore, Commodore of the NSW Police Sailing Club for holding a fantastic regatta.

Well done to all those that competed. Thanks to the NSW Police and David Blackmore for putting on a memorable regatta. The plaque (right) is being held by the Qantas team: Fred, Andrew, Wayne, Kent and Martin even though they only came second. Not surprisingly, adorned with excessive amounts of flannel, they came last in the "best dressed crew" competition. |
